DJI FPV Caddx Air Unit Kit

Digital FPV System

Brandasd
The DJI FPV Air Unit (now distributed by Caddx) is the "big brother" of the digital FPV world. It’s the only unit in the DJI lineup that lets you record 1080p footage directly to an onboard SD card. While it's heavier and bulkier than the Vista, it uses dual antennas to give you the most stable, reliable signal possible for long-range or high-interference flying.

Product Description

DJI FPV Caddx Air Unit Kit BNF Copters Version 2S-4S Size 20mm (Camera) Style Digital FPV System

The Caddx Air Unit Kit is the full-sized version of the DJI digital system. While the Vista was made for small, tight builds, the full Air Unit is built for 5-inch freestyle quads and long-range wings where you have the room to fit a larger module.

  • Onboard DVR: This is the killer feature. Unlike the Vista, which only records the low-res 720p feed in your goggles, the full Air Unit has an SD card slot. It records 1080p/60fps video directly on the drone, so if your signal drops out, you still have a high-quality record of the flight.

  • Dual-Antenna Diversity: The unit features two MMCX antenna ports. This "MIMO" technology makes the signal much more resilient when you’re flying behind obstacles or rotating the quad, as it can switch between antennas to find the best path.

  • Remote Controller Integration: It acts as your video transmitter and your RC receiver at the same time if you use the DJI Remote Controller (the "Black" V1 controller). This keeps your build cleaner since you don't need to wire up a separate Crossfire or ELRS receiver.

  • Robust Housing: The aluminum shell acts as a massive heat sink. It’s built to take a beating, though the extra weight (about 46g total) means you’ll feel the difference in how the quad handles compared to a lightweight analog build.

Technical Specifications:

  • Weight: 45.8g (Camera + VTX)

  • Input Voltage: 7.4V - 17.6V (2S-4S)

  • Power Output: 25mW - 1200mW (Unlocking required for max power)

  • Resolution: 720p/120fps (Live) / 1080p/60fps (Onboard Recording)

  • Latency: <28ms (Low Latency Mode)

  • FOV: 150° (D) / 122° (H) / 93° (V)

  • Dimensions: Air Unit: 44×37.8×14.4mm; Camera: 27.4×21.1×20.1mm

  • Mounting Pattern: Standard stacking (though it's wider than 30x30)

The Pilot's Reality Check:

  • The Voltage Limit: Crucial note: The full Air Unit is only rated up to 17.6V (4S). If you are flying a 6S quad, you cannot wire this directly to battery power like you can with a Vista. You must use a dedicated 9V or 12V regulator on your flight controller, or you will fry the unit instantly.

  • The Size Struggle: This thing is "chonky." It won't fit in "slammed" frames or many modern racing frames designed for the Vista. You need a frame with a decent "bus" or a dedicated internal bay to mount it securely.

  • Heat soak: Even with the aluminum case, it gets incredibly hot while sitting on the ground. If you leave it on for more than a few minutes without flying, the video will start to lag or the unit will shut down to protect itself.

🤔 Frequently Asked Questions
  • Is this the same as the original DJI Air Unit?

Yes, the internal hardware (VTX) is identical in performance, but the kit usually comes with the Caddx Micro Camera (19x19mm) instead of the original, bulkier DJI camera. This is an "asjalik" upgrade because the smaller camera fits almost any modern 5-inch frame without needing custom 3D-printed adapters, while still providing the same 720p/120fps low-latency feed.

  • Does it record better video than the Caddx Vista?

Much better. The Air Unit has a built-in microSD card slot that records in 1080p/60fps. The Caddx Vista doesn't have an SD slot and only records the "DVR" (the fuzzy signal you see in your goggles). If you want high-quality HD footage but don't want to carry the weight of a GoPro, this "all-in-one" Air Unit is your best option.

  • Why does it have two antennas while the Vista only has one?

The Air Unit uses MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) technology. Both antennas are used for both transmitting and receiving. This provides a significantly more stable signal, better "penetration" through walls and trees, and a more reliable link when you're flying at the edge of your range compared to the single-antenna Vista.

  • Can I use it with the DJI FPV Remote Controller?

Yes. One of its best "hidden" features is the built-in receiver. If you use the DJI FPV Remote Controller (V1), you don't need to install an extra receiver like Crossfire or ELRS. This simplifies your build significantly—you just solder the Air Unit to your flight controller, and your radio and video are both ready to go.

  • How do I keep it from overheating?

Because the Air Unit is powerful and metal-cased, it gets very hot very quickly when sitting on the ground. It has a "Low Power Mode" that kicks in to protect itself, but you should avoid leaving it plugged in for more than a minute without flying. Once you're in the air, the airflow through the frame will keep it at a safe operating temperature.
