The FrSky Taranis Q X7 is the "legendary" entry-level radio for serious FPV pilots. It stripped away the massive screen and excessive switches of the original X9D to create a more affordable, modern-looking transmitter. While it’s been on the market for years, its reliability and the massive community support behind it make it a staple for anyone starting their RC journey.

Product Description

FrSky Taranis Q X7 (Weiß / Schwarz) Radio Transmitters Version ACCST / ACCESS Radio Protocol FrSky 2.4GHz Style Traditional / Full-Size Compact

The FrSky Taranis Q X7 is a 16-channel radio (expandable to 32) that runs on the open-source OpenTX or EdgeTX operating systems. It’s famous for its distinctive "boxy but curvy" design and its ability to grow with a pilot from their first simulator session to long-range cinematic flights.

  • Protocol Versions: You will find two main versions: the older ACCST and the newer ACCESS. The ACCESS version offers lower latency and "wireless" binding, but it can be more restrictive with older "D8" receivers often found on tiny whoops.

  • Haptic Feedback & Voice: The radio features a haptic vibration motor and a built-in speaker. You can set it up to call out your battery voltage, timer, or signal strength (RSSI) so you never have to take your eyes off your goggles.

  • JR Module Bay: Like all Taranis radios, it has a standard JR bay on the back. This is essential for upgrading to TBS Crossfire or ExpressLRS, allowing the Q X7 to fly almost any drone in existence.

  • Hall Sensor Upgrade: While the standard Q X7 uses potentiometer gimbals, many pilots eventually upgrade to "M7" Hall Effect gimbals for better precision. If you buy the Q X7S version, these high-end gimbals come pre-installed.

Technical Specifications:

  • Weight: 619g (without batteries)

  • Battery: 6V - 15V (2S LiPo or 6-cell NiMH)

  • Display: 128 x 64 Outdoor Readable LCD

  • Operating System: OpenTX / EdgeTX

  • Channels: 16 Channels (Internal) / 32 Channels (Total)

  • Model Memories: 60 (expandable via MicroSD card)

  • Operating Voltage: 6-15V (2S, 3S LiPos are supported)

The Pilot's Reality Check:

  • Battery Tray: The Q X7 traditionally comes with an empty AA battery tray. Most pilots throw this away immediately and buy a 2S LiPo or a NiMH pack. Be careful: the Q X7 does not have built-in USB charging like modern RadioMaster radios; you usually have to remove the battery to charge it.

  • The "D8" Issue: If you buy the newest ACCESS version, it does not support the D8 protocol natively. This is a problem for many "bind-and-fly" micro whoops. You may need an external "Multi-Protocol" module to fly those smaller drones.

  • MicroSD Card: It rarely comes with a MicroSD card. You will need a small one (even 1GB is plenty) to store the voice files and firmware updates required to get the most out of OpenTX.

🤔 Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is the difference between the ACCST and the new ACCESS version?

The original ACCST version is the classic model compatible with older D8/D16 receivers. The newer ACCESS (2019/Current) version supports 24 channels and features an upgraded RF module for faster speeds and lower latency. Critical Note: The new ACCESS version does not support the D8 protocol (common in older tiny whoops) natively, though you can fix this by adding an external multi-protocol module.

  • Does it come with Hall Effect gimbals?

The standard Q X7 comes with high-quality Quad Ball-Bearing gimbals. They are very smooth, but they use traditional potentiometers. If you want the non-contact, magnetic Hall Effect sensors (like the M7 gimbals), you would need to look for the Q X7S version or purchase the M7 gimbals separately as an upgrade.

  • What kind of battery does it use?

The battery situation depends on the version. Older Q X7s shipped with an AA battery tray (6 cells). Newer ACCESS versions are designed to use two 18650 Li-ion cells and feature internal USB-C/Mini-USB charging. It can also accept a 2S or 3S LiPo battery via the JST balance port in the back.

  • Can I use TBS Crossfire or ELRS?

Yes, and this is its greatest strength. The Q X7 has a standard JR Module Bay on the back. It is the most popular platform for the TBS Crossfire Micro TX or ELRS modules. Note: If you use an older Q X7 with a high-speed Crossfire module, you might need to perform a simple "inverter mod" (soldering a small chip) to get the full 400k baud rate.

  • How is the screen compared to the Taranis X9D?

The Q X7 has a smaller 128x64 backlit screen. While it has less resolution than the X9D, the user interface is actually better because it uses a rotary scroll wheel instead of individual buttons. This makes navigating the OpenTX menus much faster and more intuitive.
