The DarwinFPV Darwin240 "Johnny 5" is an entry-level 5-inch freestyle quadcopter designed to be one of the most affordable ways to get into full-sized FPV flying. It follows the same "budget-king" philosophy as the popular Baby Ape, providing a solid 4S power system and a durable carbon fiber frame for a price that is often lower than building it yourself.
Bulletproof Frame Design: The "Johnny 5" frame is built for the inevitable crashes of a beginner freestyle pilot. With 5.5mm thick arms and 3K carbon fiber construction, it provides the rigidity needed for a "locked-in" flight feel while being significantly more durable than typical budget frames.
High-Torque 2207 Motors: The 2400KV brushless motors are the "workhorse" size for 5-inch quads. They provide a high power-to-weight ratio on 4S power, giving you enough "pop" to practice power loops, split-S maneuvers, and snap rolls without feeling underpowered.
Wireless Field Tuning: Like its big brother (the Darwin129), this quad includes a Bluetooth-enabled F4 flight controller. You can connect your phone at the field to change your rates or PID profile without needing a laptop or a USB cable.
800mW Video Power: The TX805P VTX is a massive upgrade over the low-power transmitters usually found in budget quads. It is switchable from 25mW for racing up to 800mW for flying behind obstacles or exploring larger areas.
Aggressive Grip: The kit typically comes with Gemfan Flash 51466 propellers, which are known for their high grip and fast response, making them a favorite for technical freestyle flying.
Technical Specifications:
Wheelbase: 240mm
Arms: 5.5mm 3K Carbon Fiber
Flight Controller: DarwinFPV F405 (MATEKF405 Firmware)
ESC: 50A BLHeli_S 4-in-1 (2S-6S support)
Motors: 2207 2400KV Brushless (Optimized for 4S)
Camera: 1500TVL Darwin "B19" (Analog)
VTX: 5.8GHz TX805P (25/200/600/800mW)
Weight: ~376g (Dry weight)
Recommended Battery: 4S 1300mAh - 1550mAh LiPo
The Pilot's Reality Check:
Voltage Note: While the ESC can handle 6S, the 2400KV motors are specifically designed for 4S. Attempting to run 6S without a strict motor output limit in Betaflight will likely result in burnt motors.
Camera Performance: The 1500TVL camera is a budget unit. It works well in daylight, but pilots often find it struggles with rapid light transitions (like flying from bright sun into a dark garage). This is a common first upgrade.
PNP Status: This is a Plug-and-Play model. It does not include a receiver, battery, or charger. You will need to install your own RX (like an ELRS or Crossfire nano) to bind it to your radio.
